Course Description & Learning Outcomes:

This course is a focused, practical refresher designed to help hygienists strengthen their skills and confidence in administering local anesthesia. Emphasis is placed on real-world strategies that support improved technique, troubleshooting common challenges, and adapting anesthesia delivery for diverse patient populations. Participants will review anesthetic solutions, instruments, and injection techniques while reinforcing safe, effective, and patient-centered clinical decision-making. Completion of this course satisfies the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry requirement for three (3) hours of continuing education in local anesthesia administration.

Learning outcomes are:

  1. Assess patients and select appropriate local anesthetic drugs and techniques.
  2. Explain the pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors, including dosage considerations, as it relates to clinical practice.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of maxillary and mandibular injection techniques with an emphasis on effective anesthesia delivery and anatomical considerations.
  4. Consider implementing alternative and innovative local anesthetic techniques.
  5. Recognize and prevent common complications associated with local anesthesia administration.
